  • She Picked My Next Book is one of our favorite reading challenges! In Round #4 we have two books that honestly couldn't be more different, and we have just two weeks to read them and report back. Reading is even more fun when someone else picks the book... or is it? We'll find out today if we have two winners or losers on our bookshelves, and we'll share what we thought of each book along the way. Happy summer reading!

"The Power and the Glory" is a hard, profound masterpiece written by a man who truly wrestled with the Faith.
When the whisky priest says, "It's only paint..."
    My heart...💔
I think we (especially women) these days have gotten so used to "easy" or "cozy" novels that sometimes a book as brutal as TPATG is like reading in a foreign language.
But Graham Greene definitely isn't for everyone. My mother would sooner chew glass than read him. 😉
Perhaps you would like the film "For Greater Glory", which is set at the same time in history.

A few months ago I read Willa Cather's "Death Comes for the Archbishop", and that has set the bar pretty high for me. In the category of masterful, powerful, beautiful writing, she wins. I found that "The Power and the Glory" fell far short in comparison. Graham Greene's characters were so shallowly (and weirdly) depicted that I just couldn't relate. But it's good that we can all have different opinions, and I did enjoy reading yours. Thank you for sharing :)

Delightful video and what a wonderfully daring idea for you two to choose each other's next book! Thanks for brightening up my evening - I'm currently reading The Silver Chalice by Thomas Costain, and am enjoying it.

The Power and The Glory is REALLY GOOD! I read it and starting underlining passages.
Its set in the Mexican Revolution. The church was persecuted. They are forcing priests to marry, not wear clerics in public. Pope John Paul 2 was the first one to go againest that law. Hang in there. The part when the priest and the jeffe talk is gold.

I think back on that section of the book thirty years after I first read it. GENIUS.

Oh bummer! I've heard such good things about The Power and the Glory. Sorry it was so disappointing for you. Hopefully your next catholic fiction pick will be better 😊

Such a fun video. Too bad you didn’t like the book. I find classics can be hit or miss.

Yes- that was a bummer. I was surprised looking into the reviews for this one later how many other people also did not like it (for a variety of reasons). It was even initially condemned by the Vatican. But- we can all have our own opinions, right? Kate and I are glad you enjoyed the video :)

I’ve read neither and I probably won’t. I haven’t read Catholic fiction. I may need to google the topic.

Catholic fiction does seem to be a hit or miss world; we don't read a lot, but this year we set out to try to read a bit more.

Ulysses by James Joyce is also considered a masterpiece, but it's unreadable except by a few demented readers.

Dissappointed in you . That is a good book. I never heard of persecution being fun and games...

No, persecution is is definitely not, which is why I mentioned Christ in Dachau.
